Finnish defence company Patria has successfully conducted test firings of its new ARVE mobile artillery system, known officially as the 155 SPG (Self-Propelled Gun). The tests took place in June 2025 and demonstrated the system’s performance under various firing conditions, including different elevations, side angles, and direct fire scenarios.

Unveiled in March 2025 at the international Arctic Event in Lapland, the ARVE system is designed for Arctic conditions and is based on Patria’s existing 155K98 field artillery gun. The system is mounted on a Sisu all-terrain truck chassis and represents entirely domestic production.

The ARVE system is modular and fully compatible with Finland’s current artillery fleet in terms of maintenance, spare parts, and ammunition. It is also interoperable with NATO-standard artillery ammunition and fire control systems.

“The completely successful test and acceptance firings are a testament to both Patria’s domestic weapon system expertise and ARVE’s technical readiness,” said Mikko Leino, Executive Vice President of Patria’s Defence and Weapon Systems Business Area. “We believe that our new product will meet the performance requirements of our customers and will also find its way into international markets.”

According to Patria, the system combines excellent mobility with a high rate of fire and is also capable of engaging naval targets. Despite its advanced features, the ARVE solution relies on proven subsystems already in operational use, ensuring both reliability and cost-effectiveness.

The company highlights the adaptability of the system, which can be integrated into various vehicle platforms and incorporated into customers’ own indirect fire control systems. It is presented as part of a broader artillery framework suitable for both domestic and international use.

“It has been truly great to develop to Patria a new and innovative ARVE mobile field gun system for our overall indirect fire offering, especially now that the security situation in our neighboring areas has become more tense,” added Leino. “The system is designed for harsh field conditions and our expectations regarding its usability, performance and reliability are very high.”

Patria anticipates that production of the ARVE system will contribute positively to employment across several Finnish provinces. The estimated annual employment impact is at least 70 person-years, depending on production volumes.
