This procurement will see deliveries commence towards the end of 2024 and continue into 2025. The new radios will be integrated into the Finnish Army’s M18 C5 system and the wider radio family used by the Finnish Defence Forces, gradually replacing the existing stock of analogue tactical radios.
Bittium Tough SDR radios, designed as software-defined radios, offer advanced broadband tactical communication capabilities. This move is set to enhance operational performance by enabling continuous upgrades and maintenance throughout the product’s lifecycle. “We have achieved a major milestone in the development of our Bittium Tough SDR radios. The products are now ready for serial procurement,” noted Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President of Bittium’s Defence & Security business segment.
Kangas further expressed gratitude towards the Finnish Defence Forces for their collaborative role in the radios’ development. “In cooperation we have been able to ensure that the radios meet the requirements of the Finnish Defence Forces and the battlefield. The product development and performance enhancements for the products will continue for their existing features,” he added. This ongoing commitment to development will ensure the radios remain effective under evolving battlefield conditions.
The modernised radios are set to deliver significantly improved performance compared to older digital tactical radio models. Bittium’s SDR technology allows for the use of multiple waveforms, enhancing the radios’ compatibility and adaptability across various missions and operational levels.
Additionally, the Bittium Tough SDR radios will integrate seamlessly with the existing Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) system, already in use by the Finnish Defence Forces. This compatibility facilitates robust tactical broadband communications, extending from brigade command centres down to individual soldiers.
The original purchase agreement of 2018 included clauses for optional additional procurements, allowing the Finnish Defence Forces to acquire further equipment, training, and system management for all branches of the military. The Tough SDR family comprises handheld models for dismounted troops and vehicular models for vehicle installations, enabling enhanced situational awareness and more efficient command.
Bittium’s technology, featuring a wide range of frequency bands and NATO-standard waveforms, such as the ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform, positions the Finnish Defence Forces to operate seamlessly alongside allied troops. This investment underscores Finland’s commitment to modernising its defence communications infrastructure and strengthening interoperability with NATO forces.
