Germany: Bundestag approves funding for Type 127 air defence frigates

By Defence Industry Europe

In December 2024, Germany's Bundestag budget committee has approved funding for the construction of six Type 127 air defence frigates, including five confirmed vessels and an option for a sixth. These advanced ships will replace the three Sachsen-class (Type 124) frigates commissioned between 2004 and 2006, which are set to be retired in the early 2030s.

The Bundestag’s approval marks the start of the design and construction programme for the Type 127 frigates. A final decision on the supplier is expected in early 2025, followed by the signing of a production contract. Delivery of the vessels is projected to begin around 2034.

The Type 127 frigates are designed for cutting-edge capabilities, including defence against ballistic and hypersonic missiles. They will also have the ability to execute precise strikes on land and sea targets and will integrate the advanced American Aegis combat management system.

In September 2024, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tKMS) and NVL Group (Naval Vessels Lürssen) announced a joint venture to bid for the project, proposing the MEKO A-400 AMD design. tKMS previously stated that, if selected, construction could begin as early as 2025.
