According to the Reuters news agency, the Federal Republic of Germany is planning to sign a deal with Boeing to purchase 60 heavy transport helicopters, CH-47F Chinook, for up to EUR 8 billion. This amount includes investments in necessary infrastructure and service contracts.
According to Reuters, the purchase of 60 CH-47F Chinook helicopters will cost EUR 6.27 billion. Additional costs include EUR 700 million for service, EUR 240 million for national contracts, and EUR 750 million for infrastructure.
The budget committee is expected to address this matter in the near future, prior to the summer recess. The procurement of helicopters will be funded from a special EUR 100 billion fund for the modernization and expansion of the Bundeswehr, announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in 2022.
As previously reported by Defence Industry Europe, in May, the US State Department approved the potential sale of Boeing CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters to the Federal Republic of Germany. Boeing won the bid to replace the currently used Sikorsky CH-53G Stallion, defeating Lockheed Martin, which had been promoting the CH-53K King Stallion in the German market.
