Lightspace Technologies expands Latvian production to meet rising defence market demand

By Defence Industry Europe

Lightspace Technologies, a subsidiary of Finnish defence group Summa Defence Plc, has announced an investment in a new production facility in Ventspils to boost its clean room manufacturing capabilities. The expansion will support increased production volumes of the company’s advanced augmented reality (AR) displays.

“Demand in defence markets is growing rapidly and this investment enables quick production scaling. Making rapid investment decisions is exactly what the Summa Defence Group can offer and enable for its subsidiaries to quickly increase production,” said Ilmars Osmanis, Managing Director of Lightspace Technologies.

Founded in 2014, Lightspace is a deep technology company specialising in XR technologies—augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR)—for defence and healthcare sectors. The company’s product development and manufacturing operations are based in Latvia.

In June 2024, Lightspace announced a partnership with Rheinmetall Electronics UK to jointly develop advanced AR systems designed specifically for defence and security applications. The collaboration aims to leverage both companies’ expertise to create cutting-edge AR solutions.

Lightspace is recognised globally as a leader in multi-focal AR near-eye displays, where AR functions as an AI interface. Its current AR glasses, designed to integrate with armoured fighting vehicle helmets, provide users with a 360-degree view and mission-critical information from inside vehicles such as main battle tanks.

Additionally, the company is developing ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) AR headsets for ground control personnel operating military drones. This development complements the range of drone systems offered by Summa Defence, further enhancing its defence technology portfolio.
