Hanwha to develop GPS-guided fuze for K9 artillery, targeting sixfold reduction in 155mm shell impact dispersion by 2032

Hanwha Aerospace has been selected as preferred bidder for a KRW 164.2 billion programme to develop an advanced Course Correction Fuze for 155mm ammunition used by the K9 self-propelled howitzer. The project will run through 2032 in cooperation with South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration, or DAPA.

The Course Correction Fuze, or CCF, is designed to turn conventional 155mm artillery rounds into more precise munitions by correcting their trajectory after firing. Installed at the front of the projectile, the system uses GPS-based navigation to guide those adjustments during flight.

Hanwha expects the technology to reduce the K9’s impact dispersion to approximately one-sixth of its current level. The improvement is intended to allow artillery units to engage long-range targets more precisely while using fewer rounds.

The CCF is also designed for use with existing 155mm ammunition through replacement of conventional fuzes. That approach would allow existing ammunition to gain improved precision without requiring a completely new projectile.

Higher accuracy could also reduce the number of rounds needed to achieve the required effect, according to Hanwha. The company said this would help preserve artillery barrel life and reduce the logistics burden associated with ammunition supply.

The development adds another precision capability to Hanwha’s work on the K9 artillery platform. The company said it plans to continue improving the K9 while developing next-generation artillery technologies.
