Spanish defence group Indra has officially closed the acquisition of the Duro Felguera industrial plant in Gijón (Asturias), aiming to transform the facility into one of Europe’s most advanced manufacturing sites for military vehicles and tanks. The purchase includes the integration of 156 skilled professionals into the company, who bring extensive experience in designing and producing heavy, complex industrial components.

This move significantly enhances Indra’s industrial capabilities, reinforcing its position as a key player in both the Spanish and European defence sectors. It also marks a pivotal step towards establishing Asturias as the central hub for the production, assembly and integration of land-based military platforms.

The company views this strategic acquisition as vital to supporting Spain’s and Europe’s defence sovereignty and operational autonomy. “Today marks the beginning of the commitment I announced to bring together the manufacturing of high-value military land vehicles in Asturias, using 100% Spanish technology, through Indra Land Vehicles,” said Indra Group’s CEO, Ángel Escribano.

Escribano further emphasised the importance of reviving the region’s longstanding industrial tradition, stating: “It is a reflection of our commitment to Spanish talent and domestic manufacturing capabilities in a region with a long and rich industrial history we must revitalize, one with a network of experienced suppliers and highly specialized professionals that our country needs.”

Indra Group’s CEO, José Vicente de los Mozos, highlighted the strategic dimension of the move: “This acquisition is aligned with the strengthening of our industrial capabilities, one of the objectives of our Leading the Future Strategic Plan, which will help us to continue to grow and become more competitive.” He added, “We have to be able to produce more and faster, to strengthen our operational autonomy while also doing our bit to ensure the sovereignty of Spain and Europe.”

A ceremony was held to welcome the 156 professionals joining Indra, who will now undergo training to participate in defence-related projects. The company plans to modernise machinery and reconfigure the production space to accommodate new assembly lines for both tracked and wheeled military vehicles.

The Gijón plant spans 75,000 square metres, including 23,000 square metres of covered facilities that will be upgraded to meet the demands of modern defence manufacturing. Indra aims to position the site as a leading contributor to future multinational programmes developing next-generation tanks using Industry 4.0 technologies.

Indra is already a major European player in defence electronics, contributing to key R&D projects such as FAMOUS and MARTE under the European Commission. It also holds a prominent role in Tess Defence, responsible for delivering the 8×8 Dragon Wheeled Combat Vehicles.

With Indra Land Vehicles, the company seeks to make Spain a reference point in the global defence industry while driving regional economic development through the creation of high-quality specialised employment. This initiative builds on its existing presence in Asturias, where Indra already employs 400 professionals and operates a technological development centre in Gijón.
