Indra completes installation of Lanza 3D long-range radar for Spanish Air and Space Force

By Defence Industry Europe

Indra, a leading Spanish defence company, has successfully completed the implementation and testing of its latest Lanza 3D long-range radar for the Air Surveillance Squadron 2 (EVA-2) of the Spanish Air and Space Force. This new radar, located in Toledo, will enhance the monitoring of airspace over central Spain as part of a wider effort to modernise the country's air surveillance capabilities.

This project is part of an ongoing initiative to upgrade the Spanish Air and Space Force’s air surveillance and control systems, replacing outdated equipment with next-generation technology. Indra will be deploying a total of five radars, including four fixed Lanza 3D Long Range Radars (LRR) and one deployable Lanza 3D Tactical Radar (LTR-25).

The newly installed systems represent a significant technological advancement. They are equipped to detect a wide range of airborne threats, including aircraft, drones, and missiles, even those using advanced materials and technologies designed to avoid radar detection. These systems will ensure all EVA squadrons tasked with protecting Spanish airspace are operating with state-of-the-art radars.

Indra’s radars are integral to the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defense System (NATINAMDS), which provides air defence for the European countries within the Atlantic Alliance. The Lanza 3D radar is recognised as one of the most advanced on the market, ensuring Spain remains at the forefront of radar technology.

Francisco Jiménez, Defence Systems Business Development Director at Indra, highlighted the strategic importance of this project, stating, “The Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces decided decades ago to foster the development of radar technology within Spanish industry. Today, we can proudly say that we are one of the world’s most advanced countries in this field.” He further noted that the technologies used in radar development also have various civilian applications, underscoring their broader significance.

Indra has long supported the Spanish Air and Space Force by providing maintenance and technological improvements for its radar systems. The new Lanza 3D radars, which are part of this ongoing partnership, ensure that Spain’s air surveillance systems remain at the cutting edge of defence technology, with the capability for future upgrades to address emerging threats.

With over 7,000 square metres of manufacturing space and a workforce of 200 specialists, Indra is a key player in the global radar market, supplying systems to various European countries, including France, Germany, the UK, and Poland. The company has also contributed to the development of radars for the Eurofighter aircraft and mobile radars for NATO.
