The RAPIDFire system, recently deployed on the French Navy’s new force supply vessel Jacques Chevallier, has completed a year-long deployment that included multiple live-fire exercises. This remote-controlled 40mm turret is the first of its kind to feature the CT40 weapon and is equipped with state-of-the-art optronics developed by Thales, as well as high-performance 40mm telescoped ammunition crafted by CTAI, a KNDS France subsidiary.
Offering robust self-defence, the RAPIDFire can hold up to 140 rounds, allowing for approximately 30 intercepts without the need to reload. The system recalibrates after each shot, enabling it to track and counter targets, including light aircraft, missiles, and ships, from up to 4km away. The gun is compatible with a variety of telescoped ammunition types, including A3B airburst rounds that provide an added advantage in anti-air warfare.
To date, the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has ordered 14 RAPIDFire units, with two already in deployment and two more scheduled by mid-2025. This acquisition aims to fortify the French Navy’s defensive capabilities across several vessels.
Also on display is KNDS France’s Narwhal, a versatile 20mm remote-controlled turret suitable for both light patrol vessels and heavier frigates. With over 180 units deployed globally, KNDS France continues to develop the Narwhal, exploring an upgrade to a 30mm cannon that would enhance its effectiveness against drones, a growing threat in naval defence.
In collaboration with Naval Group, KNDS France is working on the LMP (Multi-purpose Modular Launcher), designed for close-range protection against surface and aerial drones. Leveraging its expertise, KNDS aims to equip the LMP with cutting-edge munitions tailored for these emerging threats, reinforcing its commitment to countering asymmetrical warfare.
KNDS France’s presence at Euronaval 2024 also highlights its standing as a leading European provider of naval ammunition, supplying over 60 armies worldwide with a portfolio ranging from 20mm to 127mm rounds. Through its subsidiaries, KNDS Ammo France and KNDS Ammo Italy, the company is showcasing ammunition solutions that provide operational superiority to naval forces facing a diverse array of threats.
