The multipurpose frigates will be constructed in Peru by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) in collaboration with state-owned shipbuilder SIMA Peru. The new vessels are based on the HD HHI HDF-3200 frigate design and are expected to have a displacement of 3,400 tonnes, a length of 127 metres, and a top speed of 26.5 knots. These ships are designed for long-range patrols, capable of covering 6,000 nautical miles.
The Kongsberg Maritime contract includes twin controllable pitch propellers, shaftlines, bearings and seals, along with associated control systems. This equipment will be crucial to ensuring efficient and agile performance during operations.
Björn ten Eicken, Vice President – Naval at Kongsberg Maritime, expressed the company’s enthusiasm about the project: “The Peruvian Navy is embarking on a major fleet renewal, and we are delighted that our controllable pitch propeller technology, a popular choice for many of the world’s navies, will feature on their first frigate.”
He highlighted the importance of advanced propulsion in enhancing naval performance: “Propulsion is a key part of a navy’s capability, and we are proud to be supplying a product that combines decades of operating experience with the latest advances in hydrodynamics to provide a propulsion system that delivers efficient operation combined with excellent manoeuvrability.”
