Kongsberg Discovery successfully tests HUGIN Endurance, a revolutionary long-range AUV

By Defence Industry Europe

Kongsberg Discovery announced the successful completion of the factory acceptance testing for the first production model of the HUGIN Endurance, its innovative long-range Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

Launched in 2021 as the largest member of Kongsberg’s AUV family, the HUGIN Endurance began its sea trials in September 2023. After rigorous testing and refinements over several months, the vehicle demonstrated its robust capabilities in a final event in March 2024, impressing the client with its performance.

Martin Wien Fjell, President of Kongsberg Discovery, expressed immense pride in the milestone, celebrating the company’s first anniversary as Kongsberg Discovery. “I am very proud of the team’s hard work. This project was delivered in record time, and I extend a huge thank you to everyone involved in this success,” Fjell remarked.

A versatile solution for diverse marine applications

The HUGIN Endurance is designed to serve a wide array of applications, from seabed mapping and oceanographic research to surveillance of offshore infrastructure and environmental monitoring. Its versatility is highlighted by its capability to carry diverse payloads as per customer requirements.

“The HUGIN Endurance program has garnered significant interest from both defence sectors and commercial operators,” Fjell added, emphasizing the AUV’s potential impact on various marine activities.

Unmatched technical specifications

Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors including a high-resolution synthetic aperture sonar, multibeam echo sounder, and an environmental data suite, HUGIN Endurance is engineered for detailed marine exploration. It also features a large configurable space for custom payloads and extended battery life, enabling it to undertake autonomous missions of up to 15 days, covering distances as long as 2200 km (1200 nautical miles).

New enhancements in the model include increased redundancy, an advanced autonomous mission management system, and improved situational awareness, which are pivotal for long-term, unsupported maritime missions.
