Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the U.S. government have signed an amendment to an existing contract for the acquisition of a second HIMARS rocket artillery battery. The agreement was concluded through the Defence Resources Agency and expands Lithuania’s procurement of high mobility artillery systems.

Under the updated contract, Lithuania will acquire additional launchers along with combat and training ammunition. The package also includes various types of guided rockets, command and communication systems, as well as logistics, maintenance and training support.

“HIMARS is an American mobile artillery system that has proven itself in the war in Ukraine and is used by 14 NATO and partner countries. U.S. allies have committed to deliver the first battery already this year, but we are investing in the future and further strengthening the country’s defence, deterrence and our ability to defend together with allies on the eastern flank,” said Robertas Kaunas, Lithuania’s Minister of National Defence.

Lithuania first signed a contract with the United States in 2022 for the acquisition of HIMARS systems. That agreement included launchers, ammunition, training, maintenance equipment and services for system integration into NATO’s long-range defence network.

The total value of the contracts for the first and second HIMARS batteries is approximately $778 million. The systems will be delivered by Lockheed Martin.

The ministry said the HIMARS system is compatible with other technologies used by the Lithuanian Armed Forces, facilitating integration into existing defence plans. It added that personnel have already undergone training with a U.S. HIMARS unit deployed in Lithuania in preparation for the first deliveries.

The United States remains one of Lithuania’s key strategic partners in defence. Over the past three years, Lithuania has purchased around €2 billion worth of military equipment from the U.S., making it the largest buyer of American weapons among the Baltic states.

Lithuania’s acquisitions from the United States include Javelin anti-tank missile systems, JLTV armoured vehicles, Black Hawk helicopters, HIMARS artillery systems and AMRAAM missiles for medium-range air defence. The ministry said these procurements are part of broader efforts to strengthen national and allied defence capabilities.
