Navantia integrates Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system in S-83 submarine

By Defence Industry Europe

The Navantia shipyard in Cartagena has begun integrating the innovative Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system into the S-83 submarine, part of the S-80 class fleet. This development further solidifies the S80 class as one of the most advanced conventional submarine models available globally.

The AIP system, unique in its engineering, produces hydrogen from sustainably sourced bioethanol stored on board. The Bioethanol Processing System enables this hydrogen to combine with stored oxygen, generating electricity via a fuel cell, which powers the submarine’s batteries and significantly extends its submerged endurance by two to three times compared to traditional models.

The AIP technology is designed to operate effectively at any depth and under all mission conditions, enhancing adaptability across naval operations. This characteristic establishes the S80 class as possessing the most advanced AIP system currently on the market.

Navantia’s S80 submarines are the only 3,000-ton class vessels equipped with this state-of-the-art AIP system. The combination of this advanced propulsion technology with a sophisticated design aimed at stealth ensures that these submarines are nearly undetectable, opening promising avenues for export and strengthening Navantia’s position on the international stage, along with its network of collaborators.
