Once equipped with explosive munitions, the Reaper will be able to protect friendly forces and conduct precision strikes. The aircraft will no longer need to pass targeting data to another weapon system before a target can be engaged.
The first armed flight confirms completion of integration work that began in April 2024. The project forms part of a wider modernization package that also covers two ground-based command-and-control stations.
The Netherlands originally acquired the MQ-9A to collect intelligence and conduct patrol missions. Information gathered by the aircraft was intended to support crewed strike platforms.
Changes on the battlefield prompted Dutch authorities to expand the Reaper’s operational role. The upgraded aircraft can carry GBU-12 Paveway II guided bombs and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, both already used by Dutch military aviation.
The current phase is limited to training munitions. Flights with weapons carrying explosive payloads will follow after the training workup and once operators have completed the required qualifications.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense stressed that the armed MQ-9A is not an autonomous weapon. Military personnel at a ground control station will continue to make every decision on the use of the aircraft and its weapons.
The ministry said the technical process for employing an armed Reaper is comparable to operating a crewed attack helicopter or fighter aircraft. Human operators remain responsible for authorizing each weapons engagement.
