Netherlands partners with DeltaQuad to supply advanced drones to Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has entered into a EUR 42.6 million agreement with the Netherlands-based company DeltaQuad to supply advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) drones to Ukraine. This purchase marks the first concrete step in implementing the Drone Action Plan, announced by Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans during his recent visit to Ukraine.

The unarmed ISR drones are designed to fly long distances and provide real-time battlefield intelligence. Equipped with the latest technology, they can remain undetected, resist jamming, and operate autonomously if contact with their home base is lost. These capabilities are crucial for Ukraine, which relies on such drones to monitor Russian military movements and strengthen its defensive positions.

The purchase is part of a larger €400 million fund allocated for the Drone Action Plan, with more than 50% of this investment benefiting the Dutch drone industry. The deal with DeltaQuad is a key element of this initiative, aimed at enhancing the Dutch defence sector while supporting Ukraine’s military needs.

Beyond the immediate military support, the acquisition is also expected to boost the development of the Dutch drone ecosystem. The Defence Ministry aims to foster greater specialisation and scale within the national industry to drive the production of advanced drones. The Drone Action Plan, also known as the Unmanned Systems Production Security Plan (APOS), consists of three key pillars: the urgent procurement of drones for both Ukraine and Dutch forces, the development of an innovative domestic drone industry, and the creation of favourable conditions for financing and procurement processes.

Defence Minister Brekelmans highlighted the importance of this step, saying, “This order with DeltaQuad is a significant and concrete step in our action plan. Ukraine urgently needs advanced drones that can be delivered in the short term, and it’s great that the Dutch industry can contribute to this effort. This order will also help further develop the drone ecosystem in the Netherlands.”

DeltaQuad CEO Sander Smeets expressed pride in the company’s role in supporting Ukraine, noting that their drones are built to perform well in challenging and rapidly changing conditions. He emphasised the importance of international collaboration between military, policy makers, and industry to ensure success.
