Israel launches AI and Autonomy Administration to enhance defence capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

The Israeli Ministry of Defence (IMOD) has established a dedicated AI and Autonomy Administration under its Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D), also known as MAFAT. This new body will drive innovation in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems across all military branches, aiming to maintain the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) operational advantage.

The initiative, launched in collaboration with the IDF, seeks to centralise and accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies. Experts from IDF technology units, academia, defence industries, and startups will collaborate to deliver technological and operational breakthroughs.

IMOD Director General, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, who inaugurated the Administration at a ceremony yesterday, described it as a “historic milestone” in military innovation. He emphasised its potential to enhance operational effectiveness, reduce casualties, and optimise resource use, envisioning a future battlefield where soldiers and autonomous systems work in tandem.

Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Daniel Gold, Head of DDR&D, highlighted the mission to achieve global leadership in military AI and autonomy. He stressed the importance of unifying efforts across sectors and fostering partnerships with Israel’s thriving tech industry, from established firms to innovative startups.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday, was attended by senior officials, including Maj. Gen. Eyal Harel, Head of the IDF Planning and Force Build-Up Directorate, and Itamar Graff, IMOD Deputy Director General. The new Administration represents Israel’s commitment to advancing defence technology and ensuring its military remains at the forefront of global innovation.
