Nexter to boost artillery ammunition production with European Commission grant

By Defence Industry Europe

Nexter (KNDS), a leading French defence manufacturer, will significantly increase its artillery ammunition production capabilities, thanks to a grant worth EUR 41 million from the European Commission. This funding will enable Nexter to collaborate with Norwegian and Latvian defence companies, Nammo and VAK, to ramp up its power-pulse powder production substantially.

With this investment, Nexter plans to escalate its production of 155mm ammunition from the current annual output of 50,000 units to 400,000 units within the next three years. This eightfold increase in production capacity marks a significant milestone for Nexter and its partners, positioning them as key players in the European defence industry.

The grant is part of the European Union’s Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) initiative, a program designed to address the artillery stock depletion faced by European nations. Launched in 2023, the ASAP initiative aims to bolster the EU’s ability to supply critical ammunition and missiles across Europe swiftly. This is in direct response to the ongoing military support needs of Ukraine, showcasing the EU’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and supply chain resilience.

The ASAP initiative has already identified projects worth EUR 500 million to support, focusing on increasing the production of explosives, shells, and missiles. This also includes efforts to enhance testing, reconditioning certifications for capabilities, and addressing production bottlenecks.

Earlier this year, the EU co-financed a deal with Nammo to boost Sweden’s artillery ammunition production through the ASAP program. The finalization of this contract is anticipated after the EU allocates funds for the first quarter of 2024.

Nexter’s project, supported by the ASAP initiative, underscores the European Union’s strategic approach to ensuring a robust and responsive defence infrastructure. This collaboration between Nexter, Nammo, and VAK exemplifies the strength of European cooperation in enhancing the continent’s defence readiness and supporting international peace and security efforts.
