NH90 Block 1 begins flight testing with Link 22, upgraded sensors and enhanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities for NATO fleets

NHIndustries and the NATO Helicopter Management Agency have completed the first flight of the NH90 in its Software Release 3 configuration. The Italian Navy SH90 test aircraft flew in Italy on 21 July, opening the qualification campaign for the upgrade.

Software Release 3, also known as Block 1, is one of the largest capability upgrades introduced to the NH90 in recent years. The first flight came two years after the development and qualification contract was signed by the agency and NHIndustries.

The configuration will deliver operational improvements for both the Tactical Transport Helicopter and NATO Frigate Helicopter variants. Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo and GKN Aerospace developed the upgrade through the NHIndustries partnership.

Block 1 introduces Link 22, which NHIndustries describes as the first integration of the tactical data link on a helicopter. It provides secure line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight communications without depending on satellite connectivity.

The upgrade also adds the LEOSS-T high-definition electro-optical observation system and an improved civil navigation system. Further changes include additional weapons capabilities and enhanced anti-submarine warfare sensors.

The anti-submarine package includes the OTS-90 Mark II and FLASH sonar systems. These technologies are designed to improve long-range surveillance, detection, identification, acquisition and tracking.

NHIndustries said the new systems would strengthen the helicopter’s performance across maritime missions. These include maritime security, search and rescue, anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare operations.

The upgraded sensors will operate alongside the NH90’s naval mission system. Their integration is intended to reduce crew workload while improving information exchange and interoperability during multi-domain operations.

“The successful first flight of the NH90 in the SWR3 configuration marks a significant milestone for the programme and demonstrates the excellent cooperation between NAHEMA, participating Nations, NHIndustries, and Partner Companies. The flight is happening on schedule and in line with expectations considering a project of this scale,” said Michael Kohlhaas, general manager of NAHEMA.

“This achievement brings us one step closer to delivering enhanced operational capabilities that will ensure the NH90 remains a state-of-the-art platform capable of meeting the evolving requirements of our armed forces,” Kohlhaas said. The flight confirmed the initial integration of the new systems before further testing and qualification work.

“The first flight of the NH90 in the SWR3 configuration is a major achievement for the entire NH90 programme and reflects the dedication and expertise of all our teams across Europe,” said Cristian Naso, managing director of NHIndustries. He said the configuration would combine Link 22 with next-generation mission systems for demanding operational scenarios.

The flight-test campaign will now support the qualification of the Block 1 configuration. Successful completion will clear the way for its planned entry into service.
