Sentinel is being developed as a system of systems connecting more than 450 missiles and silos with Wing Command Centers and Launch Centers. Northrop Grumman said the network is designed to maintain continuous readiness while allowing the system to be modernized over decades of service.
The company has begun work on modular silo prototypes and has tested every propulsion element while expanding facilities and its workforce. Digital and modular engineering is being applied across the missile, infrastructure, communications networks and battle-management systems.
Northrop Grumman said the digital approach is intended to make future upgrades easier, control maintenance costs and shorten modernization timelines. The company also described Sentinel as offering greater accuracy, range and flexibility than its predecessor, while retaining the ability to evolve against future threats.
Three new Wing Command Centers are planned to provide integrated situational awareness and consolidated data for commanders. Construction of the first center is underway at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
The program also includes a Secondary Launch Capability designed to support mission execution in stressed environments through two-way communications with Sentinel launch silos. Northrop Grumman said the capability will operate with both Minuteman and Sentinel systems to maintain continuity as the new weapon system is deployed.
A secure fiber-optic network extending more than 5,000 miles will connect elements of the Sentinel architecture. The network is designed to provide near-real-time status monitoring and rapid command-and-control connectivity across the system.
Northrop Grumman said the early-2030s operational target reflects an accelerated schedule intended to deliver the new capability at the earliest opportunity. The company is positioning Sentinel’s new missiles, command centers, communications infrastructure and digital architecture as the foundation of the U.S. land-based strategic deterrent for decades.
