NRO successfully completes first satellite launch of 2025 with NROL-153 mission

By Defence Industry Europe

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), in collaboration with the U.S. Space Force Space Launch Delta 30 and SpaceX, successfully launched the NROL-153 mission on 9 January 2025. The mission, conducted aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, lifted off from Space Launch Complex-4 East at 10:53 p.m. EST.

This launch marks the NRO’s first mission of the year and the seventh launch supporting its proliferated satellite architecture. Following the NROL-149 mission in December 2024, this mission reinforces the NRO’s commitment to a steady launch cadence aimed at enhancing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

In 2024, the NRO achieved a significant milestone by deploying nearly 100 satellites into orbit. Building on this momentum, the agency plans approximately 12 launches in 2025, with half of them focusing on expanding its proliferated architecture. These efforts are part of a long-term plan to continue launches through 2028, ensuring sustained growth and technological innovation.

For over six decades, the NRO has provided critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems to support U.S. and allied defence and intelligence operations. Its next-generation systems aim to deliver accurate and timely data to decision-makers faster than ever before.
