By Defence Industry Europe

The Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) has signed a procurement agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to expand the production of Iron Dome interceptors. The agreement marks the first contract signed under the $8.7 billion U.S. aid package approved in April 2024 by the U.S. Congress.

The signing ceremony took place at the IMOD headquarters in Tel Aviv, attended by senior officials including IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Daniel Gold from the Directorate of Defense Research and Development, and Maj. Gen. Eyal Harel, Head of the IDF Planning and Force Build-Up Directorate.

The contract is the result of negotiations led by the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) with the collaboration of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Rafael, and various IMOD departments. It will enable Rafael to provide the IMOD and the IDF with a significant quantity of Iron Dome interceptors to enhance Israel’s air and missile defence capabilities.

The Iron Dome system, developed in Israel in partnership with the U.S., is designed to intercept short- and medium-range rockets, missiles, and UAVs. It has demonstrated high interception rates and was credited with providing substantial protection to Israeli civilians during recent conflicts.

Rafael serves as the system’s primary contractor, working alongside ELTA Systems, a division of Israel Aerospace Industries, and mPrest Defense. The U.S. MDA plays a key role in co-production and technology development, supporting not only the Iron Dome but also other systems like the Arrow Weapon System and the David’s Sling Weapon System.

This contract is part of the $5.2 billion allocation within the U.S. aid package specifically designated to strengthen Israel’s air and missile defence systems. The strategic collaboration between the U.S. and Israel in this area is intended to maintain Israel’s technological and operational defence capabilities.
