Oshkosh Defense and U.S. Marines test point-of-need manufacturing in Japan to cut vehicle repair times and logistics risk

Oshkosh Defense and the U.S. Marine Corps’ Marine Depot Maintenance Command demonstrated the production of an approved tactical vehicle replacement part in Japan during Valiant Shield 2026. The test focused on using secure digital manufacturing to reduce repair times and dependence on long-distance supply chains during distributed operations.

Oshkosh supported MDMC and authorised manufacturer MadeHere in producing an approved replacement part for the Logistics Vehicle System Replacement, or LVSR, in Japan. The component was manufactured using the AdvMFG Hub Digital Sustainment Platform, which stores approved digital part files for use by authorised manufacturers.

The same component was produced at MDMC in Albany, Georgia, during the demonstration. Oshkosh said the work showed that identical, configuration-controlled parts can be manufactured through a common digital system at geographically dispersed locations.

The platform allows authorised users to manufacture approved components while Oshkosh retains ownership of its intellectual property. The model is designed to maintain quality and configuration control while moving production closer to military units that need replacement parts.

For the Marine Corps, the approach could reduce the time required to return tactical vehicles to service when established logistics routes are constrained. Oshkosh said point-of-need manufacturing can also support obsolete and long-lead parts that may otherwise create maintenance delays.

The demonstration was aimed at sustainment requirements associated with increasingly distributed military operations in the Indo-Pacific and other contested environments. Producing parts at or near the point of need can reduce reliance on long-distance transport and allow maintainers to restore equipment without waiting for conventional supply chains.

“Future conflicts will demand new approaches to sustainment, particularly in environments where traditional logistics networks may be constrained or contested,” said Pat Williams, Chief Programs Officer, Oshkosh Defense. “Secure digital manufacturing gives maintainers the ability to produce approved replacement parts closer to the point of need, reducing maintenance delays, improving operational resilience, and helping keep critical vehicles in the fight.”

Oshkosh said its work with MDMC and MadeHere is intended to advance a more resilient sustainment model for the U.S. Marine Corps. The Valiant Shield demonstration showed how secure digital files could support distributed production while retaining manufacturing controls and intellectual property protection.
