A Polish Air Force F-35A Lightning II pilot has made history by taking the first flight with their new aircraft on 31 January 2025. This event highlights the growing military cooperation between Poland and the United States.

The flight took place at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, where the 33rd Fighter Wing oversees Foreign Military Sales (FMS) operations. Major FMS programmes are designed to strengthen long-term defence relationships, enhance interoperability, and provide access to joint training and military doctrine.

Colonel Dave Skalicky, commander of the 33rd Fighter Wing, emphasised the significance of this achievement. He noted that the initiative demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. to equipping allies with advanced capabilities and fostering greater integration in strategic defence.

Training for the Polish pilots began in October 2024 at Eglin Air Force Base, where they underwent simulator and academic training. Colonel Nicholas Ihde, commander of the 85th Fighter Group, praised the dedication and collaboration involved in building the FMS programme from the ground up.

The programme’s success reflects the combined efforts of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Poland, and other defence partners. Fort Smith’s local and state officials have also played a supportive role in facilitating the training process.

Fort Smith Mayor George McGill expressed pride in hosting the Polish pilots’ initial F-35 flights. He highlighted Ebbing’s crucial role in preparing allied forces for the future of defence and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting international partnerships.

Poland’s acquisition of the F-35 will significantly enhance its air defence capabilities, reinforcing regional security and national sovereignty. The new aircraft is expected to provide advanced combat effectiveness and operational flexibility.

A Polish student pilot described the milestone as a historic moment for the Polish Air Force. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation with the U.S. and confidence in the high-quality training provided at Ebbing.

The Polish pilots are scheduled to complete their training and graduate in spring 2025. This initiative marks a major step forward in military collaboration, ensuring stronger defence ties between Poland and the United States.
