Rheinmetall presents Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicle to the Italian Army

By Defence Industry Europe

On 3 February 2025, Rheinmetall presented the Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicle to the Italian Army at the Nettuno military training area, home to the Technical Office for Army Armaments. The event was organised by the Deputy Secretary General for Defence and Director of National Armaments, Dr. Luisa Riccardi, and attended by high-ranking officials, including Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano and Army Inspector Lieutenant General Carmine Masiello.

Industry representatives also participated, including Stefano Pontecorvo and Roberto Cingolani, President and CEO of Leonardo Spa, respectively, alongside Alessandro Ercolani, CEO of Rheinmetall Italia, and Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. The Lynx KF41, produced in Hungary, arrived in Italy on 31 December 2024 at the Army’s Multifunctional Test Centre in Montelibretti, near Rome.

The vehicle is being considered for procurement in various configurations under Italy’s ‘Armoured Infantry Combat System’ (AICS) programme. Developed by Rheinmetall in 2015, the Lynx KF41 is a next-generation tracked vehicle designed with a modular structure, allowing adaptability for different operational roles.

Its design supports multiple configurations, including use as an infantry fighting vehicle, troop carrier, mobile command post, and medical evacuation vehicle. Military engineers and auditors have conducted a series of tests to evaluate its mobility, protection, firepower, and interoperability.

These assessments are part of Italy’s broader efforts to modernise its armoured vehicle fleet. The presentation of the Lynx KF41 marks a step in the evaluation process, as Italy considers potential options to enhance its military capabilities.

The collaboration between Rheinmetall and Leonardo Spa highlights ongoing efforts to integrate advanced defence technologies into Italy’s military infrastructure. This partnership aligns with national and European defence initiatives aimed at strengthening operational readiness.

Further evaluations will determine whether the Lynx KF41 meets the requirements of the Italian Army. The results will inform future procurement decisions and possible integration into Italy’s armed forces.

Italy has outlined plans for a major modernisation of its ground forces, with a procurement programme that includes up to 380 new main battle tanks and over 1,000 infantry fighting vehicles. The Lynx KF41 is one of several candidates being considered as part of this initiative.

As part of the AICS programme, the Italian Army is prioritising the acquisition of technologically advanced vehicles that enhance operational effectiveness. The ongoing trials of the Lynx KF41 contribute to this objective by assessing its suitability for Italy’s defence needs.

The presentation at Nettuno represents a phase in the broader evaluation and modernisation strategy of Italy’s land forces. The Italian Army will continue its assessments before finalising its procurement decisions regarding new infantry fighting vehicles.
