Rheinmetall UK advances autonomy with new Centre of Excellence for British Army

By Defence Industry Europe

Rheinmetall UK is pushing forward the next generation of autonomous battlefield mobility, aiming to enhance operational effectiveness, improve safety and support the British Army’s modernisation priorities. Central to this effort is the PATH Autonomous Kit, which recently secured first place in the “Automated Convoy” category at the European Land Robotics (ELROB) 2024 competition.

The PATH technology is scalable and adaptable across a range of platforms, enabling uncrewed ground vehicles and logistics convoys to operate with precision in challenging terrains and conditions. Rheinmetall has demonstrated its leader-follower technology using Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicle (RMMV) HX platforms, successfully tackling tarmac, steep gradients and dense woodland.

To accelerate delivery, the company is establishing a UK-based Advanced Land Autonomy Centre of Excellence, complementing existing global hubs in Germany, the Nordics and Canada. The centre will focus on integration, testing and deployment of autonomous systems, supporting British sovereign capability while generating high-value engineering and technology roles.

‘’Autonomy is key to delivering speed, agility, and operational advantage,” said Rebecca Richards, Deputy CEO, Rheinmetall UK. “By investing in the PATH Autonomous Kit and our UK Centre of Excellence, we are ensuring the British Army has access to pioneering autonomous capabilities, integrated on British soil.”

“The PATH autonomy kit is compatible with all in-service NATO vehicles, offering seamless interoperability and the ability to enhance existing fleets as well as future platforms. We are excited to have the UK join this partnership to accelerate the advancement of autonomous systems,” said Pietro Mazzei, President and CEO of Rheinmetall Canada.
