Roke awarded GBP 251 million contract to lead UK missile defence research programme

By Defence Industry Europe

Roke, a subsidiary of Chemring Group PLC, has secured a major contract from the UK Ministry of Defence to lead a long-term missile defence programme. The multi-year framework, named Science & Technology Oriented Research & development in Missile defence (STORM), is valued at GBP 251 million over six years and begins with immediate effect.

The contract will see Roke partner with the UK Missile Defence Centre (UK MDC) to spearhead a UK sovereign industry collaboration. Its goal is to strengthen national and allied security by developing capabilities to counter present and emerging threats, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

As the Prime Contractor, Roke will deliver part of the work directly while overseeing a group of industry partners responsible for the majority of the contract’s execution. This role consolidates Roke’s position at the core of the UK’s missile defence research and development ecosystem.

Roke’s involvement in STORM is expected to shape critical UK defence decisions and support the evolution of future missile defence technologies. The programme comes at a key moment for UK defence, as the threat landscape becomes increasingly complex and fast-moving.

Michael Ord, Chief Executive of Chemring, stated: “We are delighted that Roke has been trusted to deliver STORM for the UK MDC. In today’s complex and changing security environment effective missile defence is crucial to protecting the UK’s interests.”

He added, “This contract recognises Roke’s heritage in helping customers solve complex problems, and places Roke at the heart of the UK’s missile defence research and development activities.” The award reflects Roke’s continued reputation as a trusted and capable defence technology provider.
