Romania intends to purchase submarines

By Defence Industry Europe

The Ministry of National Defence of Romania has decided to acquire submarines for the naval forces. According to local media, the ministry has submitted a request to parliament for consent to this procurement. The preferred submarine may be the Scorpene-class, offered to Romania by the French shipbuilding giant Naval Group, Romanian media reported.

The local Romanian media do not specify the value of the future contract and the number of submarines that the Ministry of National Defence plans to purchase.

However, the Romanian parliament must approve all defence contracts worth EUR 100 million or more.

Last year, Romania signed a letter of intent with France for the purchase of two Scorpene-class submarines.

According to defenseromania.ro website, the value of this order may amount to around EUR 500 million.

Some Romanian experts say that the Romanian Naval Forces need at least three new submarines.
