Major general Teodor Incicas, Head of the General Directorate for Armaments at the Romanian Ministry of National Defence, announced that Bucharest plans to buy a battalion of Abrams tanks produced by American defence company General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS).

“We are in the process of sending our (ministry) request for preliminary approval to acquire a batallion of Abrams tanks,” major general Teodor Incicas was quoted saying by defence ministry publication Observatorul Militar. Incicas heads the army’s general weapons division.

Incicas said the acquisition, once approved, will be done through a government to government deal. The timeline for the purchase was unclear.

As Defence Industry Europe reported yesterday, Romania also plans to buy F-35 Lightning II fighters from the US.
