Royal Marines enhance Arctic warfare skills with new L403 rifle

By Defence Industry Europe

Royal Marines are intensifying their Arctic training as they integrate new equipment ahead of a major NATO exercise in March. Nearly 2,000 personnel from the UK Commando Force are currently deployed in Northern Norway’s harsh winter terrain for Winter Deployment 25.

As part of their ongoing development, the Commandos are trialling advanced equipment, including the L403 rifle, which is designed to enhance combat effectiveness in extreme cold weather. Snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles are also being utilised to improve mobility across the icy landscape.

The deployment underscores the UK’s commitment to the defence of the High North, a region of increasing strategic significance. To mark their progress, the Royal Marines hosted a delegation of high-profile visitors, including representatives from NATO, the Joint Expeditionary Force, and allied nations Norway and Sweden.

Vice Admiral Martin Connell, the Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord, attended the event at Camp Viking in Skjold, 74 miles south of Tromsø. He observed live demonstrations and engaged in discussions about the role of UK forces in Arctic operations.

“It’s been a fascinating 24 hours inside the Arctic Circle with the UK Commando Force as they hone their winter warfighting skills,” Vice Admiral Connell stated. “Not many people can operate in this unforgiving environment.”

Visitors experienced the demanding conditions firsthand, where temperatures can drop to -35°C and sunlight is scarce during the polar nights. They travelled in Wildcat and Merlin helicopters and Viking-protected all-terrain vehicles, witnessing the Royal Marines’ capabilities in Arctic warfare.

A key highlight was an explosive demonstration showcasing how precision targeting of high-value enemy positions is enabled by the Commandos. Attendees also had the opportunity to handle the new L403 rifle, designed for enhanced performance in extreme cold.

The current training prepares UK forces for Exercise Joint Viking, Norway’s largest military exercise of the year. The exercise will test allied forces’ ability to defend the region against potential threats, with over 10,000 troops from seven nations participating.

Joint Viking will take place across Norway’s complex landscape, including its rugged fjords and mountainous terrain. The Littoral Response Group (North), made up of Royal Marines, amphibious ships, landing craft, and air support, will play a key role in the operation.

The UK’s Littoral Response Group is designed to provide a rapid reaction force for crises in Europe’s strategic waterways. A sister unit, Littoral Response Group (South), is responsible for similar operations in the Mediterranean and beyond.
