This historic test was designed to gather essential data to support the integration of Tomahawk missiles into the Dutch fleet. The exercise aimed to assess the warship’s readiness and provide operational insights for the future deployment of the RTX Tomahawk Block V cruise missile.
The Tomahawk long-range cruise missile, with a range exceeding 1,000 kilometres, will enhance the Dutch Navy’s precision strike capabilities. Once fully operational, the missile will enable the engagement of strategic land-based targets, such as command centres, air defence systems, and enemy units, directly from Dutch warships.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence announced the decision to acquire Tomahawk missiles in April 2023, planning to equip the LCF-class (Luchtverdedigings- en Commandofregat) air defence and command frigates. The new Orka-class submarines, currently being developed by French shipbuilder Naval Group, will also be armed with the same cruise missile system.
Additionally, future multi-purpose support ships, intended to accompany the LCF frigates, may also carry extra Tomahawk missiles. This procurement programme reflects the Netherlands’ commitment to enhancing naval strike capabilities, increasing deterrence, and strengthening interoperability with NATO allies.
With this test, the Netherlands has become the fourth country capable of firing Tomahawk cruise missiles from naval platforms.
