Saab secures SEK 340 million order for Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar from Sweden

Swedish defence company Saab has announced a significant order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for its Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar system. Valued at approximately SEK 340 million, the contract will see the delivery of these cutting-edge radar systems to the Swedish Navy between 2024 and 2026.

 

The procurement covers various configurations of the Sea Giraffe 1X, designed for both training purposes and operational deployment on surface vessels. The radars will enhance the Navy’s capability to safeguard coastal and littoral zones with advanced threat detection and classification technology.

“We are happy to continue to provide the Swedish Navy with modern radar systems. Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute in protecting coastal and littoral areas and strengthen the naval units with advanced capabilities to detect, track and classify threats in the air and on the surface,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

The Sea Giraffe 1X boasts state-of-the-art functionality, capable of simultaneously detecting, tracking, and classifying aerial and surface objects, including drones. Its software-defined architecture allows for ongoing updates to counter emerging threats, ensuring long-term operational effectiveness. The system is versatile, suitable for use on both smaller and larger vessels, including autonomous ships.
