Schiebel showcases advanced SAR radar integration on CAMCOPTER S-100

By Defence Industry Europe

Austrian drone manufacturer Schiebel, in collaboration with MDA Space, has successfully showcased the capabilities of IMSAR’s NSP Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with Ground and Maritime Moving Target Indication (GMTI and MMTI) functionalities. The week-long trial took place at the Foremost UAS Test Range in Western Canada, demonstrating the integrated system's performance in challenging operational conditions.

The IMSAR NSP radar system was integrated into Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-100 ahead of schedule, with all radar electronics housed within the antenna pod. The system’s software enables seamless mission planning, allowing radar flight plans to be directly uploaded to the S-100 platform for streamlined operation.

During the trials, the CAMCOPTER® S-100, equipped with the IMSAR radar, Wescam’s MX-8 EO/IR sensor, a GPS Anti-Jam System, and an Automatic Identification System (AIS), successfully completed a series of simulated land and maritime tasks. The system demonstrated its capabilities during both day and night operations, achieving high-resolution SAR imagery, GMTI detections, and tracks at ranges exceeding 100 nautical miles.

The trials showcased the platform’s ability to provide wide-area surveillance and detection capabilities under a variety of weather conditions. Neil Hunter, Head of Global Sales for Schiebel, remarked, “The integration of IMSAR’s radar with the S-100, in combination with a powerful EO/IR, significantly expands the platform’s surveillance and detection capabilities, allowing for wide-area coverage at impressive distances in all weather conditions.”

Schiebel emphasised that the CAMCOPTER S-100 continues to deliver actionable intelligence in real-time, solidifying its role as a versatile multi-sensor platform for demanding operational environments. The trial further underlined the system’s value in enhancing situational awareness for both ground and maritime missions.
