Sentinel Photonics has launched LASERD NOMAD, the first system in its range of vehicle-mounted laser warning systems. The UK-based laser threat detection specialist said the system is designed for rapid deployment on armoured and soft-skinned military and security platforms.

LASERD NOMAD extends Sentinel’s LASERD technology to mobile operations. The company said the system can be used on platforms ranging from boats to land vehicles.

The system provides real-time laser threat awareness to vehicle crews. Sentinel said it gives crews 10 to 30 seconds to take defensive action before a strike or precision-guided munition impact.

Alerts are delivered through audio and visual cues on a rugged Android device. The device runs Sentinel’s Laser Detect application.

The system uses a threat-specific sensor architecture to filter out civilian and battlefield background lasers. Sentinel said this supports reliable performance in complex electromagnetic environments where false alarms can be mission-critical.

“Vehicle crews operating in contested environments face laser-guided threats they cannot see coming,” said Jackson White, CCO at Sentinel Photonics. “NOMAD closes that gap. It retrofits to any platform in minutes, operates without degrading vehicle performance, and delivers operationally validated early warning that gives crews a real chance to survive.”

NOMAD provides continuous 360-degree horizontal and 150-degree vertical coverage with no blind spots. It detects rangefinders and target designators across the non-visible spectrum.

The system can be integrated with existing vehicle systems through a walk-on fit. Sentinel said it can also be retrofitted to platforms from Humvees to light patrol vehicles without affecting performance or mobility.

LASERD NOMAD has a low size, weight and power footprint. It weighs 1.1 kg, measures 200 by 160 by 100 mm, and connects to a vehicle power outlet from 5v to 24v or directly to a standard USB outlet.

The system is IP67-rated and validated for harsh environments. Sentinel said its field performance has been independently verified against military-grade designators and rangefinders at standoff ranges above 4 km.

Field trials confirmed designator detection at greater than 50 metres diffuse scatter at 4.3 km and 10 metres off-axis at 4.3 km. They also confirmed military rangefinder detection at 20 metres diffuse scatter at 4.3 km and 5 metres off-axis at 4.3 km.

Sentinel said the system’s sensitivity is 30 pJcm-2 or better across the full waveband. The results mean crews can be alerted when they are in or near the targeting zone of designators or rangefinders.

The warning time is intended to allow immediate action drills. These can include emergency manoeuvres or deployment of countermeasures to improve crew survivability.

LASERD NOMAD is available through Sentinel Photonics’ global partner network. The network spans Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and North America.

The system ships as a complete Platform Protection Device. It includes mounting hardware, a vehicle power kit, an end-user device and the LASERD Laser Detect application.

Sentinel said in-country training and remote or on-site support are included as standard. Software upgrades are provided throughout the product lifecycle to support continued system performance.

Sentinel Photonics provides laser threat awareness systems for land, sea and air applications. The company said its integrated ITAR-free systems are used to detect, decode and counter laser-based threats.
