By Defence Industry Europe

In December 2022, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed a USD 235 million contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) for the delivery of Light Armed Helicopters (LAH) to the South Korean Armed Forces.

Under the agreement, KAI will produce and deliver to the South Korean Armed Forces 10 Light Armed Helicopters. The deliveries will start in December 2024.

The Korean Aerospace Industries’ LAH is a second helicopter developed by Korean defence industry. First was the KUH-1 Surion, which serial production has launched in 2012 by KAI.

According to KAI, the LAH is equipped with a digitalized cockpit which is furnished with state-of-the-art equipment including a smart multi-functional display, and an integrated electronic map computer. It is armed with a 20-millimeter turret machine gun, guided air-to-surface missiles, and rockets.

The company said LAH is also the first domestically-produced helicopter to be equipped with the Korean Army’s tactical data link, giving it an upper arm in performing network-based missions.
