SpaceX launched the U.S. Space Force’s classified USSF-481 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on October 15. The Falcon 9 flight marked the 70th launch supported from the installation this year.

The rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4 East. Guardians and Airmen assigned to Space Launch Delta 30 provided range support for the national security mission.

SpaceX ended its broadcast at first-stage separation without revealing details of the payload. The Falcon 9 Block 5 booster, serial number 1081, returned to Earth after its 28th flight.

Unofficial observations indicated that the payload entered Earth orbit. Neither SpaceX nor the Space Force disclosed its composition or operational purpose.

Some observers suggested the launch carried Starshield-based communications satellites or spacecraft for a military low Earth orbit constellation. Those suggestions remain unconfirmed.

Space Launch Delta 30 provides the range capabilities needed to support launches from Vandenberg. The Space Force said the installation’s launch operations serve national security, economic growth and national space objectives.

SpaceX provides federal launch services alongside United Launch Alliance and Blue Origin. Its multiyear agreement runs through the end of 2030 and has a maximum value of $5.6 billion.
