By Defence Industry Europe

The Spanish Council of Ministers has granted approval to the Ministry of Defence to enter into a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the acquisition of SIRTAP drones. The future contract is valued at approximately EUR 595 million.

The comprehensive agreement will entail the supply of 9 complete SIRTAP systems (each system will include three drones)and 2 simulators, equipped with advanced instruction and training capabilities, to ensure optimal operation and maximize the system’s potential. The contract also includes initial logistical support, facilitating a smooth transition to the new technology.

This strategic acquisition represents a significant advancement for the Spanish Armed Forces, replacing existing systems that have reached the end of their operational life. The state-of-the-art SIRTAP system is expected to substantially enhance the armed forces’ capabilities, improving efficiency and effectiveness in critical operations.

According to Airbus Defence and Space, SIRTAP will provide a performance leap in the high-end tactical UAS segment. The dual applications of the system offer a wide range of missions tailored to the operational needs of customers in both institutional and governmental markets. Designed to operate under the most challenging environmental and operational conditions, the UAS will be certified for segregated airspace and civil operations on the same platform.

SIRTAP will be capable of operating in all weather conditions, with an ice protection and high-temperature amplitude system enabling flights between -40⁰C to +50⁰C. With an endurance of over 20 hours and the ability to fly at an altitude of 21,000 feet, the tactical UAS is well-suited for day/night and maritime Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, providing rapid response for close target inspection, as stated by Airbus Defence and Space.
