By Defence Industry Europe

The Spanish Ministry of Defence has received the green light from the Council of Ministers to launch a programme to purchase eight MH-60R Romeo multi-role helicopters for the Armada (Spanish Navy).

According to the Spanish government, the cost of the future purchase of eight helicopters, including weapon systems and additional equipment, is estimated at around EUR 820.5 million.

After obtaining the approval of the Council of Ministers, the Spanish Ministry of Defence can now start negotiations with the manufacturer of the helicopters, the American defence giant Lockheed Martin.

The new MH-60R Romeo helicopters will replace the fleet of SH-60B currently operated by the Spanish Navy.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence intends to purchase AGM-114R Hellfire missiles for the new helicopters.
