Spanish Navy to field three MBDA SIMBAD RC systems, adding new ship defence against sea-skimming missiles, aircraft and drones

MBDA has signed a framework agreement to supply three SIMBAD RC systems to the Spanish Navy, giving the service an anti-missile capability it does not currently have. The deal supports a broader plan by Spain’s Ministry of Defence and Navy to strengthen the fleet’s defences against missile and aerial threats.

The systems will be integrated into operational naval units, although MBDA did not identify the vessels involved. The company also disclosed no contract value or delivery schedule.

SIMBAD RC is a remotely controlled naval self-defence system based on MBDA’s MISTRAL missile. It can provide a ship’s primary short-range defensive capability or operate as an additional layer alongside other onboard systems.

The weapon is designed to engage anti-ship missiles, sea-skimming missiles, aircraft and drones. It can be controlled by a single operator and used continuously in all weather conditions.

“This first direct agreement with the Spanish Navy is a historic milestone for MBDA,” said Eric Béranger, chief executive of MBDA. “It demonstrates our growing footprint and long-term commitment to Spain.”

“By delivering critical defense capabilities, we are enhancing fleet security and building a strategic partnership based on innovation and cooperation with the Spanish defense industry,” Béranger added. The agreement is MBDA’s first signed directly with the Spanish Navy.

The transaction gives MBDA a larger role in Spain’s naval modernisation plans and expands its position in the country’s defence market. The company said it intends to pursue further cooperation with the Spanish Armed Forces and domestic industry.
