The facility is set to commence widescale drone production in the first half of 2025, addressing the growing demand for drone technology in both defence and civilian sectors. The drones will be supplied not only to Ukraine but also to European Union and NATO member countries, supporting critical societal functions. “Drones will become a permanent part of society, playing a vital role in securing critical societal functions across civilian, defence, and security sectors,” said Jussi Holopainen, CEO of Summa Defence Ltd.
A new subsidiary, Summa Drones Ltd, will oversee the operation of the facility. Summa Drones will form a joint venture with Ukrainian companies Kort, Elf Systems, Skyassist, and MPS Development, with Summa Drones holding majority ownership. Beyond aerial drones, the facility will also produce ground and marine drones, expanding its portfolio of strategic technologies.
“The drones which will become part of Summa Defence Group’s product portfolio through the joint venture have already demonstrated their importance and strategic capabilities in Ukraine,” added Holopainen. “Establishing production in Finland enhances security of supply both in Ukraine and internationally, while also contributing to critical infrastructure protection and emergency operations.”
Summa Defence aims to position itself as a leading player in dual-use technologies, focusing on mobility, situational awareness, and protection for both civilian and defence applications. The company seeks to collaborate with growth-oriented organisations and leverage synergies within its group to participate in larger international projects, particularly in NATO member countries. Acquired firms will maintain their identities while benefiting from shared resources and global opportunities.
The establishment of the drone production facility is part of Summa Defence’s broader strategy to expand its influence in the security and defence technology sector. The company is currently finalising negotiations to acquire additional firms in the field, further cementing its position as a leader in innovative defence solutions.
