Sweden and Hungary strengthen defence ties with focus on JAS Gripen fighter collaboration

By Defence Industry Europe

On Ovtober 16, Sweden and Hungary took a significant step towards strengthening their defence ties, as Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson and his Hungarian counterpart, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) aimed at expanding cooperation between the two nations.

The LOI is a follow-up to an earlier agreement signed on 23 February 2024 in Budapest, which laid the groundwork for enhancing collaboration on defence matters, particularly focusing on the JAS Gripen fighter aircraft.

This new bilateral declaration sets out plans for both countries to intensify their work on defence cooperation. The key aspect of the LOI is the formation of a working group tasked with exploring and identifying opportunities for collaboration on defence materiel. The group will include representatives from Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration, Swedish defence company Saab AB, and Hungary’s Ministry of Defence.

“I look forward to seeing the working group’s concrete results in the future,” commented Minister Jonson, signalling optimism about the future outcomes of the agreement.

The Letter of Intent reflects both countries’ desire to deepen their defence partnerships, particularly as Sweden continues its path towards NATO membership and Hungary plays a critical role as a NATO ally.
