The government’s defence budget for 2024 has reached 143 billion kronor – double the level of just four years ago. This rapid increase is largely driven by the changed security environment following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“We are in a new security policy situation where delivery capability is absolutely crucial,” said Defence Minister Jonson during a press briefing. Sweden aims to strengthen its operational capability through substantial investments in equipment and infrastructure.
FMV has placed procurement orders worth more than 67.7 billion kronor this year, marking a record level for the agency. These purchases include tanks, artillery systems, drones, trucks, ammunition and large-scale orders of personal equipment for military personnel.
The equipment is being distributed across the entire Swedish Armed Forces to boost readiness and resilience. Sweden is now among the NATO countries that have increased their defence spending the most since the war in Ukraine began.
FMV’s total financial authorisation has risen significantly, from 92 billion kronor in 2022 to an expected 244 billion in 2025. This expansion reflects both national needs and growing international demand for defence materiel, particularly amid NATO’s heightened training and operations.
“The international demand for defence equipment has increased dramatically in the short term,” said Mårtensson. “To deliver according to plan, we are in close dialogue with industry, while also supporting expanded production capacity through larger and longer contracts, often in cooperation with other countries.”
FMV highlighted that the rapid pace of procurement requires more efficient processes and better coordination in acquisitions. Key measures include standardisation, modern production techniques, engaging more suppliers, long-term contracts, and enhanced international cooperation.
Mårtensson emphasised the shared responsibility between the state and industry to meet delivery targets, control costs and expand production. “We are facing a long period of high tempo where every delivery is crucial for our defence capability,” he said.
