The Swiss Air Force’s F/A-18C/D aircraft have been in service since 1997. Under the 2017 Armed Forces Dispatch, armasuisse was tasked with implementing the “Extension of the useful life of the F/A-18 combat aircraft” project with funding of 450 million Swiss francs.
The introduction of modernised communication, navigation and identification systems was completed several years ago. Software changes for the aircraft, mission planning systems and flight simulators were also completed earlier as part of the project.
At the end of April 2026, armasuisse reached a further milestone with the completion of the subproject to inspect and renovate the aircraft structure. The combined measures ensure the continued operational readiness of all 30 Swiss F/A-18C/D aircraft up to 6,000 flying hours per aircraft.
Armasuisse said a comprehensive inspection and technically complex renovation of the aircraft structure were required to extend the useful life of the F/A-18C/D fleet. The structural renovation programme was a key subproject of the overall life-extension effort and was successfully completed at the end of April 2026.
The programme included the inspection and repair of numerous selected structural components. It was carried out in close cooperation between armasuisse, the Swiss Air Force, RUAG AG and other industrial partners.
According to armasuisse, the implementation of the structural renovation programme, together with regular inspections carried out as part of periodic maintenance, ensures the airworthiness of all 30 aircraft for continued operation. The fleet will therefore remain available for Swiss Air Force missions during the transition period before the new fighter enters service.
Some logistics deliveries remain outstanding under the F/A-18C/D useful life extension project. These mainly involve replacement material and support services needed to ensure operation during the remaining useful life.
The outstanding deliveries and final project completion are planned within the approved commitment credit. According to current planning, this work is due to be completed by the end of 2027.
With the useful life extension completed, the F/A-18C/D fleet can remain in service into the early 2030s. The aircraft will continue to be used until the F-35A is implemented to protect and defend Swiss airspace.
