More than 100 battle tanks of the older Leopard 1A5 type, and possibly even as many as 180, are to be supplied to Ukraine’s armed forces – this is the promise that Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius brought with him from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands during his first visit to Kyiv. Previously, Germany had already pledged to deliver 14 state-of-the-art Leopard 2A6 tanks. Training in how to use the weapon systems has also already begun, with 600 Ukrainian sergeants to be trained. According to Defence Minister Pistorius, a total of 1,200 Ukrainians have already received training in a variety of weapons systems. Furthermore, Germany is supplying ammunition and spare parts, and providing support with maintenance of the tanks. These are just the most recent examples of Germany’s extensive military assistance, however.

Germany will supply Ukraine with modern Leopard 2 battle tanks and allow allies such as Poland, Finland and the Netherlands to do so as well. These countries had also declared their willingness to supply Leopard tanks to Ukraine. According to reports in several US media, the USA is planning to make its Abrams tanks available. The New York Times reports that 30 to 50 units are being discussed. The United Kingdom has already promised 14 Challenger tanks. The Leopard is one of the most modern and best battle tanks in the world, and is deployed in 14 European countries. For months Ukraine has been demanding Western-designed battle tanks to fight the Russian aggressors.

Rheinmetall has won an order from the Bundeswehr to supply additional rounds of its innovative 120mm practice ammunition for main battle tanks.

Under the German government’s “Ringtausch” equipment exchange programme, Rheinmetall will soon be supplying the Czech Republic with main battle tanks and other military hardware. This has now been contractually agreed in Prague between representatives of both countries and Rheinmetall.
