German defence minister Boris Pistorius wants quickly replace tanks that which federal government will send to Ukraine.

“The crucial fact is that we have to order new tanks, not in a year, but swiftly, so that production can begin,” he said during the visit to the 203rd Tank Battalion of Bundeswehr which is to send 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine.

At the end of January, Germany decided to deliver 14 Leopard 2A5 main battle tanks to Ukraine. The goal of Germany and other European countries that have declared willingness to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks is to complete two tank battalions for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“It was about figuring out who can do what — and what do both sides expect from each other,” he said.

“Germany is the largest economy in Europe, so it should also be our goal to have the strongest and best-equipped army in the EU. However, this cannot be done in three years, it will take a few more years. My job is now to set the course for the turning point to succeed,” Germany’s minister of defence Boris Pistorius emphasized in the interview published by “Bild” newspaper in December.
