Rheinmetall delivers Skyranger 30 verification model to Bundeswehr for testing

At the end of January 2025, German defence company Rheinmetall delivered the first Boxer Skyranger 30 air defence vehicle to the Bundeswehr.

The Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands has announced its decision to equip the Royal Netherlands Army with the Rheinmetall Skyranger 30 turret for self-propelled air defence systems. A total of 22 such systems will be procured, primarily to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other airborne threats such as aircraft and helicopters.

The Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands has announced its decision to equip the Royal Netherlands Army with the Rheinmetall Skyranger 30 turret for self-propelled air defence systems.

Danish defence company Terma has received its first purchase order from the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to integrate a new Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) system for the Royal Danish Army. This order comes as part of a 30-year framework agreement between Terma and DALO, signed in 2023, aimed at modernising Denmark’s air defence capabilities.

Danish defence company Terma has received its first purchase order from the DALO to integrate a new VSHORAD system for the Royal Danish Army.

The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has awarded a contract to German defence manufacturer Rheinmetall for the delivery of 16 Skyranger 30 air defence systems. The contract, which includes the supply of 16 Skyranger 30 turrets and associated ammunition, was signed on September 27. While the financial details of the agreement remain confidential, this procurement marks a significant step in strengthening Denmark’s military capabilities.

DALO has awarded a contract to German defence manufacturer Rheinmetall for the delivery of 16 Skyranger 30 air defence systems.

The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) are set to enhance their air defence capabilities with the acquisition of 19 Skyranger 30 mobile air defence systems by 2028. Rheinmetall, the Düsseldorf-based defence contractor, will deliver a prototype by the end of 2024, followed by 18 series production vehicles. The contract was signed in February 2024 and includes an option for an additional 30 systems. This procurement is part of a broader effort to modernise Germany’s defence systems, particularly in response to evolving aerial threats such as drones.

According to Rheinmetall, the Lynx Skyranger 30 will be a groundbreaking air defence system based on the tried-and-tested Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.

To close the existing capability gaps in mobile defence against drones at short range, Rheinmetall Electronics and MBDA Deutschland signed a corresponding Letter of Intent (LOI) at ILA 2024. The companies intend to integrate MBDA's Small Anti Drone Missile (SADM) into the Skyranger 30 and other Rheinmetall military vehicles. Utilising Enforcer technologies, this new guided missile offers an effective solution against small and medium-sized drones providing a high hit probability at long stand-off distances. For its part, the 30mm cannon on the Skyranger 30 offers highly efficient, mobile defence against airborne threats by combining firepower, intelligent sensor technology and high mobility at shorter ranges. This means that the two weapons complement each other perfectly.

The prototype is to be delivered by the end of 2024.
