The Skyranger 30 is designed to address critical gaps in mobile air defence, providing a combination of mobility, protection, and precision. It integrates a 30mm KCE revolver cannon, guided missiles, and advanced sensors onto a single platform.
Initially, the German system will be fitted with Stinger missiles but is planned to be upgraded with a specialised drone defence missile. The Boxer-based turret can operate both autonomously and as part of a networked defence system, with AHEAD-programmable ammunition optimised for countering drones.
This delivery follows a contract signed in February 2024, under which Rheinmetall will supply 18 production vehicles alongside the verification model. Serial deliveries are scheduled to take place mainly in 2027 and early 2028.
The Skyranger 30 is part of the European Sky Shield initiative, a collaborative air defence programme among NATO and EU nations. Countries such as Austria, Denmark, and Hungary have already ordered variants of the system for their own military platforms.
At the end of January 2025, the Netherlands confirmed plans to procure 22 Skyranger 30 systems. The contract is expected to be finalised before the end of the year, with more European nations showing interest in strengthening their air defence capabilities.
