The new system will provide advanced protection for the Royal Danish Army’s 1st Brigade by combining sophisticated sensors, such as radar, with cutting-edge effectors. Notably, DALO has contracted with Rheinmetall to supply the Skyranger 30, a state-of-the-art effector that will be a key element of the integrated defence solution. Terma’s proprietary command and control software, BMD-Flex, will serve as the backbone of the system, ensuring seamless communication between components via Terma’s communications infrastructure.
In a statement, Steen Lynenskjold, Executive Vice President of Government and Partnerships at Terma, highlighted the significance of the project. “Our primary mission is to enhance the Danish Armed Forces’ capability to defend both themselves and Denmark. Terma’s flexible air defence approach, where we integrate the best-suited systems from multiple suppliers, will provide Denmark with a rapid and cost-effective VSHORAD system for the 1st Brigade. With the selection of the Skyranger 30, DALO has chosen a top-tier effector, and we look forward to integrating it into the final VSHORAD system.”
“Any sensor, best shooter” approach
The VSHORAD system operates on the “any sensor, best shooter” principle, enabling sensors from various platforms – whether mounted on vehicles, ships, aircraft, or ground-based installations – to detect threats. This allows for a swift and efficient response by selecting the most appropriate effector to neutralise incoming dangers. By facilitating communication across different platforms, the system ensures the most effective response to threats in real-time.
The primary role of this system is to safeguard military ground units, including command stations and combat units, within the brigade’s operational area. Additionally, the new air defence capability aligns with NATO’s force goals for Denmark in the area of VSHORAD and will be fully integrated into the brigade’s operations as part of a broader, layered air defence system.
Key milestone in long-term agreement
The purchase order marks the first significant milestone under the 30-year framework agreement signed between DALO and Terma. The agreement established Terma as the system integrator for Denmark’s comprehensive VSHORAD system, which consists of various subsystems including radars, vehicles, and weapons. Terma’s role is to integrate these components into a unified solution, ensuring the Royal Danish Army is well-equipped to meet modern air defence challenges.
