The U.S. Department of the Air Force has announced the expansion of its Air National Guard KC-135 Stratotanker squadron at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. This initiative includes adding an active duty component to the squadron, transforming it into a Total Force unit.

The expansion involves the addition of four KC-135 Stratotankers, increasing the total number of aircraft in the squadron to 12. Active duty personnel will also be stationed at Eielson AFB to support the unit, with the first of the new aircraft already in place.

The Air Force determined that increasing the squadron’s size and establishing an active association would provide a cost-effective and efficient means of enhancing operational capabilities. This approach balances routine operations with the contingency readiness offered by the Total Force structure.

The enhanced unit at Eielson AFB is expected to bolster tanker capabilities, supporting both day-to-day operations and broader mission readiness. The decision highlights the strategic importance of Eielson AFB in maintaining U.S. air mobility and global reach.
