The ECP will determine which systems need replacing or enhancing using technology from the latest NFS units. Although the U212A submarines remain among the world’s most advanced, nearly two decades of service and extensive operational use have made modernisation necessary.
OCCAR-EA will conduct a Mid Life Update (MLU) study to identify obsolete components and introduce modern alternatives based on already-developed NFS capabilities. This approach is expected to close the technological gap between the submarine classes while enabling a unified support structure.
The integration of shared logistics and upgraded systems promises improved efficiency and reduced costs for the Italian Armed Forces. “This activity will ensure access to the most advanced solutions and support system rationalisation,” Rear Admiral Cannarozzo stated at the signing.
In addition, the MLU could facilitate broader collaboration with other nations operating similar submarine platforms. This could open new avenues for joint development, strengthening both operational capability and international defence partnerships.
