UK to invest GBP 1 billion in hypersonic weapons development

By Defence Industry Europe

The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MOD) is allocating up to GBP 1 billion towards the accelerated acquisition of hypersonic weapons, which can fly at speeds five times faster than the speed of sound.

The UK MOD has issued a prior information notice (PIN), inviting potential suppliers to participate in the establishment of a “multi-supplier Hypersonic Technologies & Capability Development Framework Agreement.” This initiative aims to expedite the development of the UK’s hypersonic strike capability.

The PIN outlines a budget of approximately GBP 1 billion for the framework, which is expected to span a seven-year period. The Ministry envisions a collaborative effort to fast-track the acquisition of an advanced Hypersonic Strike capability.

To facilitate engagement with suppliers, an “early supplier market engagement day” will be conducted during the summer. This event will enable interested parties to obtain further information and contribute to the success of the hypersonics program.

A paper released by the UK government online clarifies that the term “hypersonic missile” lacks a universally accepted definition. However, it generally refers to missiles capable of sustained flight within the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound while executing significant maneuverability to alter their trajectory.

The MoD’s investment signifies the UK’s commitment to developing cutting-edge hypersonic capabilities and underscores the growing importance of hypersonic weapons in modern warfare. As technology continues to evolve, nations seek to bolster their military capabilities to remain at the forefront of defence innovation.
